Description
The Plant
The Juglans regia ‘Purpurea’, commonly known as the purple walnut, develops, as its name suggests, a magnificent purple-coloured foliage. In spring, it is lighter, whereas in summer, the tones become darker (see photos).
It is a small walnut tree with a slower growth rate than the typical species. As a result, it is perfectly suited for small gardens.
Moreover, the flowers appear in May and have a brownish-red hue. Fruits may follow, but they are less abundant than those of the common walnut.

History and Origin
The species type JUGLANS regia originates from Eurasia, particularly central and southwest Asia.
The common walnut has been cultivated for millennia, with historical traces dating back seven thousand years before Christ. Greek and Roman merchants spread it across Europe, reaching France, Spain, Germany, and even Portugal.
The Purpurea cultivar represents an interesting selection for its decorative appeal, with foliage in a remarkably unique purple hue. However, its exact origin remains unknown. It was probably a spontaneous emergence.
In summary, the JUGLANS regia ‘Purpurea’ is an extraordinary plant that will delight collectors and amateur gardeners with its charming purple foliage. It adds a beautiful touch of colour to gardens of all sizes.
