Unlike other Himalayan birches with bright white bark, this magnificent variety stands out with its deep, dark coat, offering a striking contrast in any type of garden.

Year-round aesthetic interest

The true asset of this specimen lies in its bark. As it ages, the trunk is covered with intense chocolate-colored plates that gently exfoliate, revealing shades of gray and beige underneath. This interplay of textures and chromatic contrasts ensures constant visual interest, particularly noticeable during the winter season when the tree’s structure is highlighted by the light.

Botanical characteristics

Habit: Medium to large-sized tree, with an elegant and airy habit.

Bark: Scaly, dark brown to chocolate in color, highly distinctive.

Foliage: Small, oval, and slightly serrated leaves, of a soft green that brings great lightness to the tree’s silhouette.

Flowering: Appearance of delicate catkins in spring, signs of spring renewal.

Cultivation and care advice

To ensure your BETULA utilis ‘Cacao’ fully flourishes and maintains its vigor, we recommend observing the following principles:

Exposure: Full sun or partial shade. A humus-rich soil will promote its growth.

Watering: Regular watering is important during the first years after planting to allow the root system to establish itself well. Of course, watering should not take place in winter. Read our tips on how to water properly and save water here.

Location: Ideal as an isolated specimen on a lawn to highlight its silhouette, or in a group to create a graphic grove.

For proper preparation of the planting hole, we have designed specific instructions available here.

Why adopt it?

If you are looking for a collector’s tree capable of transforming your garden while offering an original alternative to traditional birches, BETULA utilis ‘Cacao’ (R) is a choice of excellence.
