The Plant<\/h2>\n

The RUBUS cockburnianus ‘Goldenvale’<\/em> is a white-stemmed bramble<\/em> that has more than one trick up its sleeve. Indeed, the color of its foliage alone makes it an exceptional plant. It evolves from a very light green in spring to summer, quickly taking on an intense yellow hue (see photos).<\/p>\n

Then, in autumn, when it loses its foliage, the impressive and perfectly straight white stems come into play. They provide an important decorative and structural element for the winter as well. During this rather dark period, the stems create a particular focal point. The color is created by a bloom covering the wood of the plant.<\/p>\n

In addition, being a bramble, this plant is particularly vigorous, but perfectly manageable without much effort (see our maintenance recommendations). This relatively unknown marvel deserves a prominent place in your garden.<\/p>\n

History and Origin<\/h2>\n

The type species, RUBUS cockburnianus<\/em>, originates from central China. It grows there on sunny mountain slopes in provinces such as Sichuan, Yunnan and Shaanxi. It is found at altitudes of 900 to 4000 meters.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the plant was identified and named in 1892 by British botanist William Hemsley at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. He chose this species name to honor the British expatriate family working in China at the end of the 19th century.<\/p>\n

However, it was not until 1907 that the plant was made public for Western gardens. As soon as Victorian and Edwardian gardeners saw the stunning white stems, the plant immediately became popular.<\/p>\n

Finally, the RUBUS cockburnianus ‘Goldenvale’<\/em> belongs to relatively recent selections. It manifested itself as a natural sport combining bright foliage and the white stems of the type species.<\/p>\n

How to plant and care for the RUBUS cockburnianus ‘Goldenvale’?<\/h2>\n

Planting<\/h3>\n

Even though this white-stemmed bramble is one of the very resilient plants, consider the following points:<\/p>\n

  1. Find it a place in full sun or partial shade. The more sun it receives, the more intense yellow it will become.<\/li>\n
  2. The location can be humid, moderately humid or dry.<\/li>\n
  3. This plant tolerates light, normal or heavy soil with an acidic, neutral or calcareous pH.<\/li>\n

    Care<\/h3>\n

    All newly planted plants require regular watering for the first two years, especially during dry periods. Of course, watering will not take place during the winter. Also read our tips on how to water properly and save water here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

    IMPORTANT!<\/strong> As mentioned above, the stems of this bramble are covered with a pristine white bloom. It should be known that this phenomenon manifests itself most intensely on the stems of the current year. Therefore, it is recommended to shave the plant completely to the ground just before the new growth appears.<\/p>\n

    In fact, this severe pruning keeps the plant compact, limits its spread and ensures an explosion of bright yellow foliage for spring and summer and perfectly white stems for autumn and winter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
