The Plant<\/h2>\n

The FRANKLINIA alatamaha<\/strong>, or Franklin tree<\/strong>, is an extremely rare<\/strong> species. We consider it a true botanical gem. This marvelous plant possesses remarkable ornamental qualities<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Indeed, its charming pure white flowers with yellow centers and a pleasant fragrance<\/strong> attract both admiring glances and pollinators. They appear in late summer and resemble camellias in shape and size<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Then the usually green, very elongated foliage<\/strong> turns brilliant scarlet to crimson in autumn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Finally, by planting this small deciduous tree with a compact form<\/strong> (around 2 m after 10 years), you contribute to its preservation since it is extinct in its natural habitat<\/strong>. Its mere presence increases biodiversity. <\/p>\n

How to plant and care for FRANKLINIA alatamaha?<\/h2>\n

Planting<\/h3>\n

To successfully grow the Franklin tree, follow these recommendations:<\/p>\n

  1. It prefers temperate zones with cool summers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. Find it a spot in full sun or partial shade<\/strong>, away from plants with aggressive root systems.<\/li>\n
  3. The soil must be well-drained<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  4. It prefers soil with an acidic pH and rich in organic matter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n

    Care<\/h3>\n

    As with all newly planted specimens, ensure regular watering, especially during the first two years<\/strong> to support establishment.

    Moreover, this small tree requires no pruning. Only remove dead branches if necessary. <\/p>\n

    History and Origin<\/h2>\n

    The FRANKLINIA alatamaha<\/em> originates from the Altamaha River valley in Georgia (USA). Its species has been extinct in its natural habitat since the early 19th century. <\/p>\n

    Moreover, only cultivation by passionate botanists and gardeners ensures its survival. Twenty-four specimens have been reintroduced into the natural habitat without success. <\/p>\n

    Furthermore, the botanist William Bartram named it in honor of Benjamin Franklin (a close friend of his father). It first appeared under this name in 1785 in Arbustrum Americanum<\/em>. <\/p>\n
